The holidays in NYC with kids

The city is magical in December and completely unmanageable at the wrong hour. This is the version that works.

The big ones

• Rockefeller Center tree — go before 8am or after 10pm. Any other time is a crowd, not an outing.
• Radio City Christmas Spectacular — best for ages 4+. Weekday matinees are calmer and cheaper.
• Origami Holiday Tree at AMNH — included with admission and a genuine kid favorite.
• Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden — book weeks ahead, earliest slot.

Markets

• Bryant Park Winter Village — the best one with kids: free skating if you bring your own skates.
• Union Square Holiday Market — weekday afternoons only.
• Grand Central Holiday Fair — indoors, warm, small enough to finish.

Lights worth the trek

• Dyker Heights, Brooklyn — peak lights, peak crowds. Go on a weeknight around 6pm.
• Brooklyn Botanic Garden Lightscape — timed entry, stroller-friendly paths.

Skating

• Bryant Park — free entry, cheap rentals, warm-up tent.
• LeFrak Center at Lakeside, Prospect Park — easiest rink for beginners, least crowded.
• Skip Rockefeller and Wollman with young kids unless it's a splurge occasion.

Mom notes

• Book everything timed and early in the day.
• Bring hand warmers, a thermos, and a firm two-hour ceiling on any outing.
